American Classics with an Indian Twist:
Imagine a scenario where the McDonald’s Big Mac becomes beef-less. Instead of beef patties, it has well-spiced juicy chicken patties. Such a scenario actually exists – in India where McDonald’s serves up the double-decked Maharaja Mac designed to appease the majority of the Indians who consider the cow sacred.
McDonald’s India not only caters to the religious sentiments of Indians, it also strives to please their spice-loving palate. The McAloo Tikki, based on a popular north Indian snack the aloo tikki, a potato patty seasoned with tandoori spices, appears on the fast food giant's Happy Price menu in a burger format. The spicy Chipotle-ish mayonnaise, the lightly-breaded delicious aloo tikki, the unbelievable price (Rs. 20 or 45 cents) and the fact that more than one-third of Indians are vegetarian make the McAloo Tikki a smash hit in the ruthlessly competitive Indian fast food market.
