Insomnia is hell. Sleep deprivation symptoms include tiredness, inability to concentrate, irritability, headaches . . . the list goes on. Help for insomnia is an obsession with many. Those for whom sleep is never a problem cannot imagine what it’s like for those doomed to wretched wakefulness, but chronic sufferers would do anything to stop insomnia.
What Causes Insomnia
A common cause of sleeplessness is pain. Someone with a sore shoulder, for example, is unlikely to sleep well. Neither is noise conducive to sleep, nor an uncomfortable bed, nor drinking coffee or alcohol late in the day. In most such cases, the problem is easily identified, and the remedy easily administered.
But what causes insomnia in those who suffer for years or even decades, and where no obvious trigger is present? It is often said that nothing identifiable lies behind their sleeplessness. But all chronic insomniacs know exactly what it is that keeps them awake: the head hits the pillow, but the mind does not. And no one can sleep if the mind won’t switch off.
