What if there was a superfood that helped reduce the risk of heart disease and cancer, helped lower cholesterol levels, give radiant skin, put people in a better mood, and helped them stay in shape? What if on top of all these benefits the foods were packed with flavor, not overly expensive and easily found in local markets? Would people give up donuts and potato chips in favor of these foods?

According to Susan Seliger, writing for Web MD, a “superdfood is a type of food believed to have health benefits beyond those of more common foods due to specific anthocyanin, phytonutrients, and antioxdant content.”

As of July 2007, the marketing of products as superfoods is banned in the European Union unless the claim can be supported by credible scientific research ("Superfood 'ban' comes into effect" BBC News, 28 June 2007), even though Steven Pratt MD and Doctor Perricone are two of their most enthusiastic endorsers in the United States.
