Van De Burgh Foods

Ageing is a phenomenon which is natural as well as irreversible. How fast one ages or, how long youthfulness is retained is determined largely by the activities of an individual and the type of food one consumes. Sedentary lifestyle and unhealthy foods containing empty calories contribute to accelerated ageing. Increased physical activity coupled with foods rich in nutrients can slow down the process of ageing. All the tissues in the body are prone to ageing and the brain is no exception. Ageing of the brain is accompanied by decline in cognitive functions. This is partly due the increased speed of destruction of the nerve cells. Several foods have the ability to protect the brain.

Nuts

Nuts contain good quantities of omega-3-fatty acids. The acid present in nuts are called ALA (alpha linolenic acid). Nuts are also rich in minerals and fiber. This combination of nutrients is helpful in protecting the nerve cells from undergoing degradation. Pea nuts are particularly useful because they also contain resveratrol. Resveratrol has the ability to slow down ageing. Resveratrol in pea nuts is concentrated in the skin and hence, it is important to consume pea nuts without removing the skin. Walnuts are considered to be the most nutritious among the nuts.

Berries

All berries are useful in protecting the brain. Berries are rich in polyphenols which have the ability to act as antioxidants. Part of the problem during the ageing of the brain is the generation of destructive free radicals. Antioxidants are compounds which have the ability to scavenge the free radicals.
